MTN MoMo (Mobile Money) is one of Nigeria's fastest-growing mobile financial services, operated under MTN MoMo PSB — a Payment Service Bank licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Beyond airtime top-up and money transfers, MoMo PSB now offers short-term micro-loans to eligible subscribers through its XtraTime and credit partner services.

If you have been using MTN services actively and have registered on the MoMo platform, you may already be pre-qualified for a loan without visiting a bank branch. This guide walks you through the process from start to finish.

What Is MTN MoMo and How Does It Work?

MTN MoMo PSB is a Payment Service Bank — not a full commercial bank — but it is CBN-licensed to offer savings, transfers, and basic credit products. It operates through the *600# USSD menu and the MoMo Agent app. Subscribers can open an account using just their phone number and BVN, with no minimum balance required.

Loans on MoMo are typically facilitated through fintech credit scoring partners. Your eligibility is based on your MTN airtime and data usage pattern, your transaction history, and whether your BVN is verified on the platform.

Requirements to Get a Loan on MTN MoMo

  • Active MTN SIM card registered in your name
  • Registered and verified MoMo PSB account
  • BVN linked to your MoMo account
  • Regular usage of MTN services (airtime, data, transactions) for at least 90 days
  • No outstanding MoMo loan in default

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for an MTN MoMo Loan

Step 1 — Register or Verify Your MoMo Account

Dial *600# on your MTN line. Select "Create Account" if you haven't registered yet. You will need to provide your BVN to unlock full account features and access credit products. Alternatively, visit any MoMo agent with your NIN and BVN to complete registration.

Step 2 — Check Your Loan Eligibility

Dial *600# → Select "Financial Services" → Select "Loans". The system will check your profile in real time. If you are pre-approved, your available loan amount will be displayed on screen.

Step 3 — Select Your Loan Amount and Accept Terms

Enter the amount you wish to borrow (within your displayed limit). Review the interest rate and repayment date. Confirm by entering your MoMo PIN.

Step 4 — Receive Funds

Approved loan amounts are credited to your MoMo wallet instantly. You can then transfer the funds to any bank account or use them directly for payments.

Step 5 — Repay on Time

Repayment is typically due within 30 days. Dial *600# → "Financial Services" → "Loan Repayment" to make a payment. You can also set up automatic repayment from your MoMo balance.

What Happens If My Loan Application Is Declined?

If you are not pre-approved, it usually means one of the following:

  • Your BVN is not verified on the MoMo platform
  • Your MTN usage history is too short or inactive
  • You have a previous defaulted loan
  • Your account does not meet the minimum transaction threshold

To improve eligibility: use your MTN line daily, top up airtime and data regularly, keep your MoMo wallet active with transactions, and ensure your BVN is linked and verified.

Interest Rates and Fees

MTN MoMo loan rates vary by product and credit scoring. As a general guide, expect a flat fee or interest in the range of 5–15% per loan cycle. Always read the full terms displayed on screen before confirming — the exact rate shown to you at the time of application is the binding rate.

Note: Do not accept loan terms from unofficial agents claiming to offer MoMo loans for a fee. All legitimate MoMo loan applications are done via the *600# menu or the official MoMo app.

Alternatives If MoMo Loans Are Not Available to You

If MoMo credit is not yet available in your profile, consider these CBN-licensed alternatives in Nigeria:

  • Carbon (Pay Later) — app-based, no collateral, instant disbursement
  • FairMoney — USSD and app loans up to ₦3,000,000
  • Palmcredit — quick mobile loans with flexible repayment
  • Branch — uses smartphone data for credit scoring
