Seeing "Transaction Pending" on OPay is not necessarily a problem — it is a normal part of how inter-bank transfers work in Nigeria's banking system. However, a pending transaction that stays stuck for too long may require action. This guide explains exactly what "pending" means on OPay, how long it should last, and what to do if it refuses to clear.

Important: A pending transaction is different from a failed transaction. Do not resend money while a transaction is still showing as pending — you risk double-charging yourself.

What Does "Pending" Mean on OPay?

A pending OPay transaction means the payment has left your wallet or card and is in transit through the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS) to the recipient's bank. The money has been debited from your account but has not yet been confirmed as received on the other end.

This happens because Nigerian interbank transfers go through NIBSS for clearing, and the recipient bank must send a confirmation back to OPay. If that confirmation is delayed or does not arrive, the transaction sits in a pending state.

How Long Should a Pending OPay Transaction Last?

  • OPay-to-OPay transfers: Usually instant (seconds)
  • OPay-to-bank (inter-bank): 2 minutes to 2 hours in normal conditions
  • During bank maintenance windows (midnight–4am): Up to 6–12 hours
  • Public holidays or weekends: Settlement may be delayed to the next business day

If your transaction has been pending for less than 24 hours, wait before contacting support.

Why Is My OPay Transaction Stuck on Pending?

  • The recipient bank's system is down or under maintenance
  • High transaction volume on OPay or NIBSS (especially end of month)
  • The transaction was initiated during a system downtime window
  • A network interruption occurred between OPay and NIBSS
  • The receiving bank account has a restriction or is dormant

What to Do When an OPay Transaction Is Stuck on Pending

Step 1 — Do Not Resend

This is the most critical step. Sending the same amount again while the original is still pending will double-debit your account. Wait it out first.

Step 2 — Check the Transaction Reference

Open OPay → Transactions → Find the pending transaction → Copy the Session ID / Reference Number.

Step 3 — Confirm with the Recipient

Ask the recipient to check their bank account or app. Sometimes the funds arrive at the recipient's end before OPay updates your transaction status.

Step 4 — Wait 24 Hours

If the recipient has not received funds and the status is still pending after 24 hours, proceed to contact support.

Step 5 — Contact OPay Support

  • In-app chat: OPay App → Help → Chat
  • Email: [email protected]
  • Phone: 0700-CALL-OPAY (0700-2255-6729)

Provide your transaction reference, the amount, the recipient account, and the time of the transaction.

What Happens After a Stuck Pending Transaction?

There are two possible outcomes:

  • It completes: The recipient receives the funds, and your status changes to "Successful"
  • It fails: NIBSS times out the transaction, and OPay reverses the amount back to your wallet, usually within 24–72 hours

Quick answers to common questions on this topic

Most OPay pending transactions resolve within a few minutes to 2 hours. Interbank transfers may take up to 24 hours during off-peak periods or bank maintenance windows.

No — do not resend. If the original transaction eventually goes through, you will send double. Wait for the pending status to resolve, then check if the recipient received the funds.

Yes. A pending transaction can eventually fail if the recipient bank does not confirm receipt. In that case, the amount will be reversed to your OPay wallet.

Pending means the transaction is still being processed — funds are in transit. Failed means the transaction did not complete and funds should be returned to your wallet.
