Whether you are waiting for a payment to arrive, need proof of a transfer, or trying to resolve a discrepancy, knowing how to track your OPay transactions is an essential skill. OPay provides a full transaction history within the app, along with reference numbers (Session IDs) that can be used to trace payments through the Nigerian banking system.

This guide covers every method for tracking OPay transactions, from in-app history to raising a formal dispute.

Method 1: Check OPay Transaction History in the App

  1. Open the OPay app on your phone
  2. On the home screen, tap the Transactions icon (usually a clock or receipt icon at the bottom of the screen)
  3. Your full transaction history is displayed, sorted by date — most recent first
  4. Tap any transaction to see its details: amount, recipient, date, time, and status

Understanding Transaction Statuses

  • Successful — payment was completed and recipient received the funds
  • Pending — transaction is still being processed by the recipient bank (see our full guide on pending OPay transactions)
  • Failed — transaction did not complete; amount should be reversed to your wallet

Method 2: Get Your Transaction Reference Number (Session ID)

The Session ID (also called Reference Number or Transaction ID) is the unique identifier for every OPay transaction. It is used when raising disputes with OPay, your bank, or the CBN.

  1. In your transaction history, tap the specific transaction
  2. Scroll down to the detail view
  3. Find the Session ID or Reference field
  4. Tap it to copy it, or take a screenshot of the full receipt

Method 3: Check Your Transaction Receipt

After every successful OPay transaction, you receive:

  • An in-app notification with a receipt summary
  • An SMS to your registered phone number
  • An email notification (if your email is verified)

All of these contain the transaction reference number. If you missed the notification, retrieve it from the app's transaction history instead.

Method 4: Share a Transaction Receipt

To share proof of payment:

  1. Open the transaction detail screen
  2. Tap Share Receipt or the share icon
  3. Send via WhatsApp, email, or save as a screenshot

This is the standard way to show proof of payment to a recipient, landlord, or business.

What to Do If OPay Shows Successful But Recipient Did Not Get the Money

  1. Screenshot the OPay transaction receipt showing the Session ID, amount, recipient account number, and bank name
  2. Ask the recipient to check their account statement — sometimes there is a delay of 30–60 minutes
  3. If not received after 2 hours, the recipient should contact their own bank with the Session ID — Nigerian banks can trace NIBSS session IDs directly
  4. If the bank cannot trace it, contact OPay support with the Session ID to raise a formal inquiry

How to Raise a Dispute on OPay

For unresolved failed transactions, double charges, or payments not received:

  1. Open OPay app → Help → Chat Support
  2. Select the dispute category (e.g. "Transfer Dispute", "Failed Transaction")
  3. Provide: transaction reference (Session ID), amount, date, and recipient details
  4. OPay responds within 24–48 hours

If OPay does not resolve within 5 business days, escalate to the CBN Consumer Protection Department at [email protected] or via the CBN complaint portal.
